The 2024 GMC Canyon: Elevating Adventure with Style
Midsize pickup trucks like the 2024 GMC Canyon have class-leading gas engine torque and 310 horsepower from their TurboMax engines. A maximum cargo of 1,670 lbs is possible, and it can tow 7,700 lbs. The Canyon’s off-road suspension comes with a factory raise and tracks extremely wide up front and in the back. Four different trim levels are available for the 2024 Canyon: Elevation, AT4, AT4X, and Denali. Similar to Chevy’s Colorado, the mid-size GMC Canyon aims to provide the same level of power and capabilities as the full-size models. Thanks to this, we were able to select both vehicles for the 2024 Editors’ Choice award. The 310 horsepower turbocharged four cylinder found in the Canyon is just one example of how these smaller mid-size trucks have taken cues from larger trucks like the Sierra and Silverado 1500.Â
What's New in 2024?
After releasing the new-generation mid-size Canyon in 2023, GMC mostly keeps the same lineup. On the other hand, the off-road AT4X trim now comes in a max-capability AEV Edition version. The AEV division offers exclusive 17-inch wheels with 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler MT tires, heavier skid plates, and steel bumpers designed for AEVs. The AEV Edition has a ground clearance of 12.2 inches, which is 1.5 inches higher than the standard AT4X.

Engine, Transmission & Performance
A 2.7-liter inline-four turbocharged engine producing 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque is standard on all Canyon models. That comes standard with rear-wheel drive and is coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission; however, we highly recommend the optional four-wheel drive. Thanks to this, the Canyon outperforms the Honda Ridgeline, Jeep Gladiator, and Toyota Tacoma in respect to power and torque provided by their V-6 engines. While both the Canyon and the Chevy Colorado share the same base and engine (a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an eight-speed automatic), the GMC offers the Canyon with the most potent version of the engine. This translates to 310 horsepower and 430 Newton-meters of torque. A Canyon Denali completed our 60 mph acceleration test in 6.8 seconds, which was faster than the Nissan Frontier’s time of 7.5 seconds. The normal RWD truck gets 18/23 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway, but if you choose the AT4 or AT4X with mud tires and 4WD, those numbers decrease to 17/20 mph.
Fuel Economy & Real - World MPG
The rear-wheel drive Elevation trim level of the GMC Canyon has the best fuel economy, with an estimated 23 highway mpg and 18 city mpg according to the EPA. Vehicles with four-wheel drive just marginally use more gas, according to the EPA, which estimates 17 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the interstate. According to the EPA, Canyon pickups with all-terrain tires may achieve an estimated 17 city mpg and 20 highway mpg. As part of our rigorous testing program, we will update this space once the Canyon has completed a 75-mph fuel-economy route.Â
Technological Features
Connectivity and ease of use are of utmost importance in today’s technologically advanced society. A variety of cutting-edge features are available on the GMC Canyon 2024 to improve the vehicle’s usability on the road. Its infotainment system has an intuitive touchscreen display and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so drivers can easily link their phones to access music, directions, and more. A wireless charging pad makes it easy to charge cellphones that are compatible without the hassle of using cords. Guests can stay connected no matter where they are thanks to the built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, which can accommodate as many as seven devices at once. Having driver-support features like a 360-degree video system and automatic parking aid makes driving much easier and safer, especially in confined places.
Interior & Comfort
The Canyon’s interior now features some much-appreciated technology thanks to GMC. The Canyon now comes standard with a head-up display, underbody cameras, and a redesigned cabin reminiscent of Chevy’s 2018 Colorado. The gear shifter is now located closer to the passenger side of the cab, making way for the drive-mode selection knob, and a new digital gauge cluster sits behind a new steering wheel. Even more conveniently located near the driver and passenger, GMC has repositioned those prized cupholders to a deeper cubby. A seven-speaker Bose music system and a head-up display are standard on the AT4X level. A larger 11.0-inch display is standard on the Denali and AT4X trims, while the 8.0-inch unit is standard on the Elevation and AT4 trims.
Safety Features
The 2024 Canyon is consistent with GMC’s long-standing commitment to safety. The driver is warned of impending frontal crashes through the use of sensors and cameras by Forward Collision Alert. Lane Departure Warning keeps drivers from drifting out of their lanes unintentionally by keeping an eye on lane markers and sounding an alarm if the driver starts to change lanes without signaling. Blind Spot Monitoring is a safety feature that helps drivers avoid side crashes when changing lanes by identifying when other vehicles are in their blind areas. As the motorist begins to reverse, Rear Cross Traffic Alert sounds an alarm to let them know that cars are coming up behind them. When driving on highways, Adaptive Cruise Control keeps you at a safe distance from the car in front of you by adjusting the speed of your vehicle. Furthermore, the Canyon’s high-strength steel frame and other robust components offer better crash protection.
Towing Capacity
The GMC Canyon 2024 has great performance when it comes to towing, which is a major selling point for pickup trucks. The Canyon provides more than enough power to pull large loads because to its selection of powerful engines, which includes a powerful V6. When you switch to the Tow/Haul mode, your transmission and engine are fine-tuned to make towing easier, so you can accelerate smoothly and keep better control even when pulling big loads. The driver can manually adjust the trailer’s braking force with an integrated trailer brake controller, which makes for smoother braking and less wear on the vehicle’s brakes when towing. Furthermore, the Canyon’s Trailer wobble Control technology applies brakes to individual wheels as needed to maintain stability while towing, thereby mitigating the likelihood of trailer wobble.
